Firebirds win season finale

? Alex Clayton’s second-half goal lifted Free State High’s soccer squad to a 2-1 victory Friday over Shawnee Mission Northwest.

The triumph allowed the Firebirds to finish the regular season 11-4-1 and tie the school record for regular-season victories.

K.J. Siebert assisted on Clayton’s goal. Aaron Ideus tied the game at 1 in the first half.

The game was the Firebirds’ regular-season finale. Free State will play host to Leavenworth at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Class 6A regional play at Kansas University’s Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

Firebirds coach Jason Pendleton said Leavenworth wasn’t a pushover.

“We beat them 2-1 in overtime in a very tough, hard-fought game,” he said. “We’re going to have to play a good game to beat them.”
