Police officers likely to be commended

Residents who survived the deadly Boardwalk Apartments fire have told stories of jumping from their windows into the arms of Lawrence Police officers, who were some of the first people on the scene.

The officers’ efforts won’t go unnoticed by the department. So far, there has been at least one recommendation for a departmental “award or awards,” said Sgt. Dan Ward, a police spokesman.

But Ward said he couldn’t go into more detail, in part because the awards process takes several months to complete. Also, he said the individual officers who arrived at the scene wouldn’t be allowed to speak to the media about their experiences at this point because of the pending criminal case against Jason Allen Rose, who’s charged with setting the fire.
