Financial sway

To the editor:

I see only 54,000 attended the Kansas University/Oklahoma University game. What a disappointment. I hope this sends a message to KU that moving games off campus is not a good idea.

I understand it will “be a money maker,” but really, KU is relying on OU to buy tickets.

I just had a friend ask me if Lawrence was closer to my parents’ house than to Arrowhead. I had never thought of it like that, but it is.

Moving games off campus is a big issue, and here in Lubbock, a premier game could be moved because of a few extra dollars. Perhaps it’s time to get state legislators involved and keep games from leaving college campuses where businesses and townies support the team during bad and good seasons along with patsy schedules, only to see the great games moved out of town.

Administrators cry out that it’s for the good of the school, but what would be better is more wins and a commitment to putting a quality product on the field rather than worrying about whether the team should bus to Kansas City or stay in a hotel.

Running off to Missouri is no way to build a program which is kind of backwards when you think of our Kansas Jayhawk history.

There’s a great tradition of KU football and its pageantry along with fantastic new facilities. I hope Saturday was a financial failure so we can make sure that the history of KU football will always include a dateline of Lawrence, Kan.
