Volunteers sought for relief effort

Volunteers are needed to help collect and distribute household items for Boardwalk Apartments tenants who lost their belongings in last week’s fire.

“We’re looking for people to help at the storage facility outside the Leo Center (Seventh and New York, north of railroad tracks) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. beginning Friday,” said Steve Ozark, who’s heading up Lawrence Community InterFaith Initiative’s relief effort.

Ozark said he fielded more than 40 offers of goods and services Wednesday.

“The thing to do now is get it in one place so it can be distributed,” he said. Volunteers, especially those with pickup trucks, are asked to e-mail Ozark at Oztalent@aol.com.

Needed items include food, toys, furniture, lamps, computers, towels, toilet paper, light bulbs, bedding, pots, pans, utensils, skillets, microwave ovens – anything a person needs to make a home.

Also, Boardwalk manager Donna Watson encouraged displaced tenants to contact her office at 842-4444 to begin the process for refunding security deposits and to pick up vouchers for donated items.
