Two-car accident claims one life

A Lawrence man died Wednesday afternoon after a two-car accident in Leavenworth County about five miles east of Lawrence.

According to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Elden M. Bailey, 66, died at 3:20 p.m. at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. He was transported there from the crash scene near the intersection of Kansas Highway 32 and 238th Street.

At noon, Bailey drove east on K-32 in a 1992 Buick Century. He slowed to turn left onto 238th Street. Then a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck struck his vehicle in the rear, according to the KHP’s report.

Thomas R. Sheppard, 46, Lawrence, drove the Ford. He wore his seat belt and was not injured.

Bailey’s passenger, his wife Janet M. Bailey, 55, Lawrence, suffered disabling injuries and was also transported to KU Medical Center. Neither Elden or Janet Bailey wore seat belts, the KHP’s report said.

A hospital official said that a condition report on Janet Bailey was unavailable.
