No religion?

To the editor:

OK, so let’s keep religion out of public life. We can then deny all African-Americans their civil rights since there will be no Martin Luther King Jr. and all the other Christians and Jews (both black and white) who marched with him. Oh, and yes, we can reinstitute sweat shops.

By the way, since we’re keeping religion out of public life, there will be no Harriet Beecher Stowe, no Abraham Lincoln, no Frederick Douglass. There will still be slavery for all African-Americans, and all of us would be reduced to animal survival of the strongest. It will be wonderful for women because they would all be demoted to chattel. Democracy as we know it would not exist; we don’t need to hear everyone’s opinion.

The great institutions of learning would fade into the mist. The hungry everywhere would still be starving. Disease would be epidemic since modern medicine owes its origin to Christians. Come on, let anarchy, rape-and-pillage rise again.

So, you betcha, we must silence the Christians, Jews, Muslims and anybody else who believes in God. (Incidentally, Salman Rushdie would most likely be beheaded since it is Christian nations that are protecting him.) Did I hear the Nazi power struggle beginning at Lied? Oh secularist deity, would you please help me pull my tongue out of my cheek, because as a citizen I am obliged to speak!

Glenn Hinkle,
