Driving danger

To the editor:

Have cell phones become a legal variation of “driving under the influence”? Both cell phone and alcohol use negatively influence concentration, awareness of important factors in the surrounding environment, ability to make quick decisions, physical response to stimuli and other crucial variables related to safe operation of motor vehicles.

New Jersey realized the dangers they present and imposed a statewide ban on use of them by drivers over a year ago. For anyone who believes it’s impossible to live without constant contact via phone, there are a growing number of inexpensive phones with speakers or even built-in systems that leave you completely free to drive.

My compliments to concerned citizens and Lawrence Traffic Safety Commission members who were willing to bring up a controversial issue needing serious consideration. Restricting the use of a device that adds to the overstimulation of modern life seems a small price to pay for increased safety; and sanity.

Sandra Sanders,
