Four injured when car strikes deer

Four people were injured Saturday morning when a car struck a deer on U.S. Highway 59 near the Douglas-Franklin county line, about 12 miles south of Lawrence.

At 10:35 a.m. Ronald Basart, 34, Springfield, Mo., was driving a 1986 Ford south on U.S. 59 when it struck the animal, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Basart then over-corrected, and the vehicle rolled and landed on its side. Basart was not wearing his seat belt. He was injured and flown to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., by LifeNet, the KHP said.

The report listed the only other passenger as Deborah K. Hill, 41, Ottawa. She also was not wearing a seat belt according to reports. She was transported to KU Medical Center by ambulance.

Lt. Kari Wempe, of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department, said that at least two other passengers were transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment.

It was unknown why they were not listed in the KHP’s accident report.

A hospital official at KU Medical Center said Saturday that a status report for Basart and Hill was unavailable.
