History museum gets $25,000 for exhibit

A Lawrence history museum has received $25,000 from the Kansas State Historical Society to provide oral history accounts of Douglas County World War II veterans and their families.

“It’s going to really enrich the records that we have about World War II,” said Helen Krische, archivist for the Watkins Community Museum of History. “We’re trying to get perspectives from all sides.”

The state historical society in October awarded oral history grants to five Kansas museums to help preserve World War II history. The Lawrence museum received the most funding from the $75,000.

Staff at Watkins will work in conjunction with the Lawrence Public Library’s Senior Citizen Outreach program, Krische said.

Staff members hope to interview 200 people, including veterans and nurses, and they hope to display the oral history exhibit in two years, she said.
