Top administrator

To the editor:

Thank you, David Shulenburger!

What an odd column about the position change of one of the top administrators in this country!

When I came to Kansas University in 1979, Shulenburger was one of my colleagues in the School of Business. He was and is an exceedingly bright, caring and loyal servant of this university. Whoever dealt with him could accept his judgment, even when disagreeing with him, because he thinks logically, ethically and never loses sight of the fact that we deal with human beings who need to be respected. Despite his fast ascendance to a lofty professional position, Shulenburger remained true to himself. To second-guess his reasons for leaving his current position, as described in the column, is an insult to this man.

Shulenburger has given many years of his life to the betterment of the university, its faculty, staff and students. Chancellor Hemenway gave an outstanding accounting of Shulenburger’s accomplishments, and I will not repeat them here. I know the chancellor is glad to have such a capable person in the difficult and challenging provost and executive vice chancellor position.

When I heard the announcement, I was delighted to learn that Shulenburger will remain at KU and return to the School of Business. Thank you, Dave, for staying. I hope you retain your sense of humor after reading the Dolph Simons Jr. column. You’ll need it.

Renate R. Mai-Dalton,
