Tree concern
To the editor:
Kansas, not known for its vast numbers of trees, should consider protecting the few that are here. In fact, it is obvious that unnecessary annihilation of trees is commonly accepted. Take for example the current development known as Hutton Farms West.
This development off Peterson Road is taking place on property that was once populated by hundreds of mature trees. The current phase has included the destruction of almost every tree. It appears to be the practice of developers to clear cut almost every tree, establish lots, and build roads with no regard for the presence of existing trees. Not only has unnecessary tree removal taken place, but downed trees have been burning in the development for weeks. The next phase in this development project will no doubt involve removal of the remaining trees.
There are states in our country that have determined it is essential to save trees and require developers to plan construction around tree locations. Certainly not every tree can be saved in a development. Tree remediation guidelines must be established when developers remove trees. A city or builder planting a couple of trees on a lot after construction does not constitute tree remediation.
It is incredible that the practice of tree destruction goes uncontested by noble and acclaimed naturalists in Lawrence. It is incomprehensible that the Jayhawk Audubon Society is not pounding fists and protesting city and county actions permitting the destruction of the few remaining trees in Kansas.
