Lawrence Schools Foundation’s annual fundraising drive is under way.

The nonprofit group mailed letters to nearly 7,000 households late last week, soliciting contributions.

Money raised by the foundation will help support the early childhood education program for at-risk 4-year-olds at East Heights Early Childhood Family Center, teacher and classroom grants, teacher recognition and student scholarships.

The foundation awarded nearly $17,000 in spring-semester grants last year.

“With private contributions, we can provide our children with not just an adequate education, but an excellent education,” said Steve Glass, president of the foundation’s board of trustees.
