Anti-recruiting group to rally on campus
A Lawrence group protesting military recruitment will hold a rally at Wescoe Beach on the Kansas University campus at 12:20 p.m. today to read a statement about abuse of Iraqi prisoners.
The statement, which is based on reports by the agency Human Rights Watch, will be read by members of Lawrence Counter-Recruitment. It says the group stands in solidarity with the abused prisoners, with civilians and soldiers killed in the Iraqi war, and with soldiers who “have been coerced into brutalizing fellow human beings.”
Last month the group marched to Chancellor Robert Hemenway’s office to ask that he ban military recruiters from campus, alleging the military’s stance on homosexual enlistees violates KU’s anti-discrimination clause.
