Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County seeks volunteers to assist with a daylong sports-equipment donation drive. Members of the Lawrence community will be encouraged to donate all types of new and used athletic equipment to benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Volunteers will assist by soliciting donations, staffing the donation site on the day of the drive, and loading donations into a truck or storage bin. Volunteer assistance is needed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, to collect donations at the Cingular Wireless store at 520 W. 23rd St.

Immediate volunteer needs

¢ ICaN Friendly Visitors seeks individuals from the community who are interested in serving as members of their advisory council. The council meets on the first Tuesday of every month and members serve a two-year term. ICaN is an interfaith volunteer effort to provide informal, nonmedical support services to older adults in the Lawrence area, helping them maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life. ¢ The Lawrence Public Schools and the Boys and Girls Club seek volunteers to work with children ages 6 to 12 in after-school programs at several sites throughout Lawrence. Volunteers are needed after school hours from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. ¢ Operation WildLife seeks volunteer wildlife caretakers. The organization provides rehabilitation services to injured or orphaned wild animals, as well as wildlife education programs. Volunteers are responsible for cage cleaning, dietary preparation, physical therapy, administering medications, habitat setup and general housekeeping duties.
