A better place

To the editor:

It is vital that I express my admiration and appreciation toward the donors of clothing, food and other commodities to our local pantries. It is heartbreaking to observe a lack of services available and watch people being turned away, week after week, in dire need of diapers, formula and clothing for the winter. Without local and community efforts, the needs of these people only increase. I encourage everyone with the ability, which is a large percentage, to donate financial assistance, food or time, which is equally as needed and appreciated as any other donated item.

I also feel obligated to give a huge thanks to the individuals who helped at the Ballard Community Center on the United Way Day of Caring (Sept. 23). They all went above and beyond by painting our multipurpose room, kitchen and office! It has really been great walking into a bright, clean space every morning. It looks magnificent!

Lastly, I want to thank and encourage all the volunteers who participate in our program at the Ballard Community Center and ask all of you to put the word out there of the importance of giving time to benefit the community and yourself. My gratitude to the professors who assign community service and volunteerism in our neck of the woods. These folks make Lawrence a better place to be!

Patti Beedels,
