Stacked team

To the editor:

Fifty to zero, 60 to nothing. Those were scores the Hurricane teams ran up on their opponents in Lawrence Youth Football. Is that really sportsmanship? This is supposed to be a learning league. How could any coach be proud that his select players were able to run roughshod over almost anyone at will?

For one instructor to be able to pick and choose the biggest and the best players for his team, without regard for others in the association, is totally unfair to say the least. Many opposing teams could only be competitive when the ‘Canes inserted the backups on their “third” squad. As Mr. Schmidt so aptly phrased it in the Nov. 3 Public Forum: “Does the fact that gravity still works surprise you?”

The second- and third-grade Hurricanes won their Toy Bowl championship. Well, who won the fourth- and fifth-grade championship? That’s right, the Hurricanes. That leaves the sixth grade. You would never guess who won this one. Surprise! A clean sweep! But that is just a coincidence, right? It also is a coincidence that one of the Hurricanes coaches just happens to be president of the Youth Football program. Is this not a conflict of interest? At any rate, it’s just not right.

A change of leadership is desperately needed at LYF, and maybe everybody on the board. For me, and others I’ve spoken with, the titles of Toy Bowl champions ring pretty hollow under the current procedures.
