Meeting to address avian flu concerns

A town hall-style meeting about pandemic influenza and avian flu has been set for Dec. 1 by the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department.

Three state and local health officials will speak at the 7 p.m. meeting in the second floor meeting room at the health department, 200 Maine.

Speakers will include Dr. Howard Rodenberg, Kansas Department of Health and Environment division of health director and state health officer, and Dr. Gail Hanson, state epidemiologist. Also speaking will be Kim Ens, disease-control program director with the local health department.

Topics will include what to expect if an avian flu pandemic appears in the United States, guidelines for seeking medical care and the state’s response plan for dealing with a pandemic.

The meeting will be open to the public.
