Curfew cause

To the editor:

Being a teenager, I don’t believe it’s right for the government to set a curfew for me. I think this right should be given to my parents. Some teenagers don’t even know there is a curfew law, and many of them find out the hard way.

This curfew is in effect from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and is extended to 12:30 a.m. on weekends. Violators of this curfew could be stuck with a hefty fine of between $10 and $100 and/or jail time not to exceed 30 days just to be on the street a little bit late. It could be walking around for some fresh air, walking home from a party or making a run to the grocery store for a midnight snack. Most teenagers who violate this minor law aren’t causing trouble, either.

Who’s to say trouble is going to be caused between 12:30 a.m. and 6 a.m.? Who’s to say a teenager isn’t going to break a law at 3:34 p.m.? The effort for upholding this law is as minuscule as upholding the law for jaywalking. The difference is that the punishment for this infraction can be extremely worse.

This article has sparked me to make a difference in my city. I’m sure if you would do the research that I did on this topic, you could understand my viewpoints and hopefully agree with me.
