Jayhawks ready to score

Kansas University women’s basketball forward Jamie Boyd knows one thing is certain when her team takes on Binghamton at noon today in Allen Fieldhouse: It might be season two, but the butterflies will be just the same.

“There’ll be jitters,” Boyd said. “It won’t be quite as bad as last year when I was a freshman, but it’ll be there.”

After two blowout exhibition victories – a 25-point victory over Pittsburg State and a 30-point thumping of Emporia State – the Jayhawks are ready for real games where the statistics count and a win goes on the permanent record.

The first will be today against Binghamton, a team that finished 10-18 overall and fifth in the America East Conference a year ago.

“It was nice to play exhibition games to see where we were at and to see what we had in place,” KU guard Erica Hallman said, “but it’s always good to get ready to start the season. I think slowly but surely we’re getting ready.”

One area in which KU coach Bonnie Henrickson already has seen improvement this season is offensive execution.

With the addition of six newcomers – including natural scorers Shaquina Mosley and Sophronia Sallard and preseason assist leader Ivana Catic – Henrickson has not had to worry about countdowns in the Jayhawks’ first two exhibition games.

Kansas put up 90 against Pittsburg State and 85 against Emporia State, both of which topped last season’s high-point mark of 84 against Dartmouth.

“I really think that all these kids think they’re going to score,” Henrickson said, “and I think that’s good for us right now.”

Kansas’ opener will be the first of 11 straight games at Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks will play all of their nonconference contests at home, with the first road game coming Jan. 7 against Nebraska in Lincoln.
