Teen charged with attempted murder after bus shooting

? A high school junior is facing an attempted murder charge after shooting her classmate in the shoulder Tuesday morning on a crowded school bus, police said.

The blast from a .32-caliber handgun was the culmination of an argument between the two teenage girls that began at school the previous day.

The victim, Kaliesha Cheatam, 17, survived. The shooter ran, prompting a massive search of Woodscape, a tree-lined neighborhood in southern Miramar.

Officials locked down two nearby schools as dogs, helicopters and a SWAT team hunted for the armed girl. At 1:20 p.m., six hours after the shooting, the girl, 17, surrendered to Miramar detectives.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is not naming her because she is a juvenile.

She faces three felony charges, including premeditated attempted murder, said Miramar police spokesman Bill Robertson.

“This was a carryover argument between the two girls that started (Monday),” Robertson said. “There is evidence that (the shooter) thought this out.”

Robinson declined to describe that evidence or discuss what caused the initial argument, saying it was still under investigation.

Officials at Parkway Academy, a charter high school, said they did not know what sparked the bloodshed. Principal Clarissa Wright had chatted with the suspect Monday in an Algebra II class.

“I’m just befuddled and beside myself to even think something like this could happen,” Wright said Tuesday. “She was kidding around with one of her classmates.”

Cheatam had been sitting on the bus since she got on near her home in Pembroke Park, Fla., Robertson said. In Miramar, the suspect climbed aboard.

“They started arguing and then bang,” Robertson said.

The bus driver radioed a dispatcher, who called 911 at 7:24 a.m.

“When I walked out, the girl was lying in the middle of the street bleeding,” said Cathavra Been, 21, who lives nearby.

Cheatam remained conscious, Robertson said, and was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Fla., where she was in serious condition but is expected to recover.
