Lack of coverage

To the editor:

Once again the high school kids in the fine arts programs have been forgotten. It has been over two years since the Journal-World covered a play at Free State High School. I’ve often wondered – is it because we aren’t regular advertisers? We’re a public school and don’t have that kind of money. On top of that, we aren’t given a price break because we aren’t frequent customers. The response I received (the one time I was responded to) was “maybe next year.” I can see now that’s obviously not true.

It’s very difficult as a director to see these kids working every day for two solid months on a production, and to not have them recognized. Do you suppose a coach has to beg the paper to cover one of their games? Maybe if I put the Sharks and the Jets from “West Side Story” in shoulder pads we could get coverage.

To those parents who ask me (regularly) why there is no coverage of the plays – contact the paper. Maybe they will give you an answer. To those students who work with me in the theater – you are awesome! You amaze me on a daily basis and I will always value what you do for our program.
