Federal assistance for flooding approved

Kansas counties recovering from October floods will get federal assistance for rebuilding infrastructure and covering the cost of responding to emergencies, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius said Tuesday.

The governor received word from the White House that federal disaster assistance she had requested was approved.

Counties eligible for public assistance are Jefferson, Atchison, Jackson, Leavenworth and Shawnee. In addition, all Kansas counties are eligible to apply for assistance under the Hazard Mitigation Program to help fund measures that prevent or reduce long-term risk to life and property from natural hazards. Federal funds provided for either program will cover 75 percent of total eligible costs in the designated areas.
