Allegations investigated at KU fraternity

Another Kansas University fraternity is under fire following a hazing allegation.

Kappa Sigma Fraternity is investigating the local chapter, 1045 Emery Road, following a hazing allegation, KU officials reported Monday. The probe so far has uncovered little evidence of hazing, but found underage drinking and other “inappropriate behavior.”

“All we can do is monitor this,” KU spokeswoman Lynn Bretz said. “Once the hearing takes place, then we’ll determine our action.”

The national organization will hold a hearing for the local chapter in January.

Kappa Sigma is the second fraternity this year to face such problems. The local chapter of Sigma Nu, 1501 Sigma Nu Place, was closed earlier this semester following hazing allegations.

“It’s too early at this point to determine whether the chapter is in trouble for things that are relatively minor or if they are problems on a larger scale,” said Scott Shorten, president of the Interfraternity Council.

In a statement, Marlesa Roney, KU’s vice provost for student success, said KU has zero tolerance for hazing.

“It is an affront to human dignity and will not be tolerated,” she said. “We are equally concerned about preliminary findings of problems with underage drinking. The university has campus programs and campaigns to educate students about alcohol and their legal and personal responsibilities. We are committed to this important effort to keep our students safe.”
