Weekend’s high winds blow tree into house

Mary Brown thought she would relax Saturday afternoon and watch Kansas University play football on television.

But right after the game started, something shook her house in the 1700 block of Delaware Street. After a heavy gust of wind, a large tree broke from its roots and landed on the southeast corner of her garage.

“It made a terrible noise, and it shook the whole house,” Brown said.

The tree was planted more than 25 years ago, she said. It stood about six feet from the garage attached to the house. The tree bent part of a rain gutter and damaged some of the roof.

Gusty winds blew through northeast Kansas Saturday afternoon.

The peak wind recorded in Lawrence was 47 mph about 3:15 p.m., said Scott Whitmore, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka.

Brown said she and her family had already called her insurance company. They were to remove the tree today.

“Yeah, it was sad to lose that tree, but it scared me,” she said.
