Students have new equation for pie

Central Junior High eighth-grader Miles Austerman releases a cream pie Friday toward the face of his algebra teacher, Sara Holley, in front of the student body in the school's auditorium. Students who raised more than 00 for the school's FunRun were given the opportunity to throw a pie. The student body raised more than 8,000.

Students at Central Junior High celebrated the close of their annual FunRun fundraising campaign with an afternoon of pie-throwing.

“Everybody who raised at least $100 got to throw one pie,” at the teacher or staff member of their choice, said Mary Ann Zamarripa, an administrative assistant and FunRun co-chairwoman.

The most popular targets, she said, were principal Frank Harwood and assistant principal Brian McCaffrey.

Nancy Temple, an in-school-suspension teacher at Central Junior High, was covered in whipped cream by ninth-grader Brian Fuentes. Temple said she and Brian had become friends over the past few years.

This year’s FunRun raised $18,632.97. The money will be used to fund events such as assemblies, field trips, award ceremonies, pizza parties and summer-camp scholarships.

“We’re really proud of our students,” Zamarripa said. “With Hurricane Katrina and the price of gasoline, we really didn’t think they would be able to beat last year’s $18,000. But they did – and they set a record.”
