A 19-year-old Lawrence man was shot in the hand trying to stop two people from stealing his money.

Police said the incident happened 7:30 p.m. Friday in the 600 block of Arkansas Street.

The victim reported he had just cashed his paycheck when two men in their 20s took the money from his house.

Police, who made a report of the incident available Tuesday, said the victim went after the suspects in an attempt to stop them and one of the men fired a handgun, striking him in the hand.

He was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for his injuries. Police said the suspects got away with close to $300.
