Drive a success

To the editor:

On behalf of the letter carriers of Branch 104 of the National Association of Letter Carriers, and the six area food banks who partnered with us, we would like to thank our friends and neighbors in Lawrence for their generous food donations on Saturday, May 14.

All told, on a beautiful spring day, over 22,000 pounds of nonperishable food was collected by city and rural carriers around Lawrence as they made their daily deliveries. In amazing efficiency, the food was returned to the post offices, unloaded, divided, repackaged, and loaded into vehicles for delivery to the area food banks.

By day’s end, the food banks reported full pantries, and sincere appreciation for the generous and quality giving by the citizens of Lawrence. Once again, Lawrence showed why it is such a special place to live and we would like to thank some other friends for their help. Special thanks to Hank and Susan at KLWN for allowing us a chance to be on the radio and discuss the drive. Also, thanks to Gwyn Mellinger at the Journal-World for her article promoting the food drive. Finally, thanks to Mayor Boog and the city commission for the proclamation declaring May 14, Food Drive Day. It truly was.

Alan Hickey,

Lawrence
