To the editor:
This letter is in response to last week's article about the closing of Lawrence Alternative High School. I would like to express my admiration and appreciation for the principal and teachers at LAHS. I have worked with them since last September, as a social worker, through the Bert Nash WRAP (Working to Recognize Alternative Possibilities) program.
I have been so impressed by teachers and students alike. Most of the students have worked extremely hard to reach their goals, in spite of myriad difficulties, i.e. family chaos, health problems, or the need for a smaller classroom that allows more personal attention. The teachers have exhibited an extremely high level of commitment to the students. Their role goes beyond simply teaching, which would be hard enough, to include parenting (at times) and friendship. The schools to which they go next year will be fortunate to have them.
I also want to use this opportunity to inform your readers that the WRAP program will be working hard this summer to help the LAHS students, who will be transferring to Lawrence and Free State High Schools. WRAP workers from both high schools have already met with some students at LAHS. We will continue to meet with students and their parents throughout the summer to ease this very difficult transition.
We are hopeful that this approach will help LAHS students establish a connection at their respective high schools. Relationships are a critical component of the school experience for all students, and the WRAP program is available to fill that need. For more information about WRAP services for any Lawrence elementary, junior or high school student, contact Bert Nash Mental Health Center.
