Memorial Day closings announced

All city, county and state offices will be closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday, as will federal offices and federal and state courts.

City offices in area towns and counties also will be closed.

Kansas University will be closed. The Dole Institute of Politics will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be no mail delivery except Express mail. UPS will not operate or make deliveries.

The Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt., will be closed Sunday and Monday. Most banks will be closed.

Lawrence Meals on Wheels will make deliveries. The Douglas County Senior Services meals program will not operate.

The Lawrence Transit System, the T, will be closed Monday, and fixed route and paratransit buses will not run.

There will be no city yard waste pickups Monday. Trash pickups and commercial pickups will run as usual. The holiday will affect trash collection in several area communities. In Tonganoxie, residents who normally have their trash picked up on Tuesday will have it picked up on Wednesday. DeSoto and Eudora residents who normally have their garbage collected on Monday will have it picked up on Tuesday instead.

Parking meters in downtown Lawrence will be free Monday.

The Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Ky., will be open from 1 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be open for lap swimming from 5:15 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. The water slide and diving area will be open from 1 to 8:30 p.m. and the zero-depth and children’s area will be open from 1 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Road, will be open and available for tee times. Call 748-0600.

All city parks and recreation centers will be open. There will be no recreational classes, adult sports or other events.

The Journal-World will publish Monday. The circulation office will be open until 10 a.m. USA Today will not be published.
