Firebirds to face SMNW; softball gets 6th seed

Free State High’s baseball team has been seeded third for this weekend’s Class 6A state baseball championships at Hoglund Ballpark.

The Firebirds (18-3), runners-up in last year’s state meet, will face No. 6 seed Shawnee Mission Northwest (13-8) at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the opening round.

Manhattan was accorded the No. 1 seed based on its 20-2 record and will meet No. 8 Wichita Northwest (11-11) at 4 p.m. Friday. Maize (19-3) is the No. 2 seed and will go against No. 7 Olathe South (12-10) in Friday’s first game at 11 a.m.

Friday’s other first-rounder will pit No. 4 Shawnee Mission East (15-6) against No. 5 Hutchinson (14-8) at 6:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Free State’s softball team has been pegged as the No. 6 seed for the Class 6A state tournament at Clinton Lake Softball Complex.

The Firebirds (13-9), who will be making their first state appearance, will meet No. 3 Wichita Northwest (19-3) at 7 p.m. Friday on one of the two CLSC fields being used for the eight-team tournament.

Defending state champion Olathe East, unbeaten in 22 games this season, is the No. 1 seed and will tangle with No. 8 Shawnee Mission North (9-13) at 5 p.m. Friday.

Second-seeded Shawnee Mission Northwest (20-2) will meet No. 7 Goddard (10-10) at 5 p.m. Friday, and No. 4 Maize (17-5) will collide with No. 5 Emporia (13-7) at 7 p.m.

Semifinals, third-place games and championships in baseball and softball are scheduled for Saturday.
