Commencement Guide

Your guide to attending commencement exercises at Kansas University, which are Sunday. The procession starts at 2:30, with the ceremony beginning at Memorial Stadium about an hour later.

Avoiding stairs

An elevator in Snow Hall can take attendees between Jayhawk Boulevard and Memorial Stadium to avoid stairs.

Parking and buses

Free parking is available throughout the campus this weekend. Buses will run from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, with the loop serving the stadium, Kansas Union, Jayhawk Boulevard, Murphy Hall, south parking facility, Burge Union, Daisy Hill and the Lied Center.

Handicapped parking

Handicap parking is available on the stadium’s west side, accessible from 11th and Maine streets, and on the east side at 11th and Mississippi streets. A drop-off zone near the Memorial Stadium elevator also is available.

Special seating

People with handicapped placards or identification cards from the state may sit in folding seats on the track, entering from Gate 3.

Interpreters

Sign-language interpreters and reserved seating for people using interpreter services are available in the north bowl of the stadium in sections 25 and 26, in rows 29-33. For questions on interpreters, call 864-2620.

Stadium accommodations

Seat-back rental, concessions and other services will be available at the stadium beginning at 1 p.m. Restrooms are on the concourse level. The procession also will be shown on the stadium’s video board.

Alcohol

The consumption of alcohol is prohibited during commencement.

Simulcast

The ceremony will be broadcast on a screen in Woodruff Auditorium, on the fifth floor of the Kansas Union.

Ceremony broadcast

The ceremony will be broadcast live on KUJH, Sunflower Broadband Channel 31 in Lawrence, and on the Internet at www.journalism.ku.edu. The ceremony also will air at 7 p.m. May 22 and 23 on KUJH. Copies of the ceremony video will be available for $15 at www.kustore.com.

Inclement weather

If there is bad weather Sunday morning, an announcement will be made at 1 p.m. for arrangements for a postponed ceremony. The announcement will be made through the KU Info Center (864-3506), Sunflower Broadband Channel 6 and radio stations including KJHK (90.7 FM), KANU (91.5 FM), KFKF (94.1 FM), KLZR (105.9 FM), WIBW (580 AM), WDAF (610 AM) and KLWN (1320 AM). Changes also will be posted at www.ljworld.com.

If the weather begins to clear in the afternoon, the ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m., with graduates assembling on Memorial Drive at 4 p.m.

If it doesn’t clear for a 4:30 p.m. ceremony, the next attempt will be at 6:30 p.m., with graduates assembling at 6 p.m.

If it’s still raining then, the ceremony will be postponed until 9 a.m. Monday, with graduates lining up at 8:30 a.m.
