Sunny and hot weather moving in today

It was a foggy start this morning. But this afternoon, Lawrence will become very summery, with sunny skies and temperatures reaching nearly 90 degrees.

“Make sure you wear the shorts. And the sunglasses,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “. . . It’s going to be a toasty afternoon.”

At 7:15 a.m., the temperature was 57, winds were calm and the humidity was 100 percent, making perfect conditions for fog in some of the low lying areas around Lawrence, Schack said. The fog, which reduced visibility down to a fourth of a mile at Lawrence Municipal Airport, is expected to dissipate later this morning, she said.

“Once the fog burns off, we have plenty of sunshine in the forecast,” she said. Temperatures will hit nearly 10 to 20 degrees above average throughout Kansas today, especially in western Kansas, she said.

Lawrence’s high temperature today will be 89, with mostly sunny skies and west winds 5 to 10 mph, she said. The average high for this date is 77.

Overnight, the city’s temperature will fall to 59 degrees by early Friday morning. Friday’s high will climb to a high of 87, she said.

“It’s almost all sunshine tomorrow,” she said.

Saturday’s morning low will be 60, with the high reaching 87 degrees by Saturday afternoon, under cloudy skies.

On Wednesday evening, the Lawrence area received a heavy downpour about 8 p.m., with the western part of Douglas County getting the most rainfall, Schack said. Rainfall reports ranged from 1.46 inches three miles west of Lawrence to 0.5 of an inch reported at. 24th and Louisiana in south Lawrence, Schack said.
