Ex-husband convicted in fake bomb plot

? An Wichita man who tried to frame his romance novelist ex-wife by planting a fake bomb on his porch was convicted Wednesday of filing a false police report.

Sedgwick District Court Judge David Kaufman said he had no doubt that Gary Brock, 52, planted the fake bomb and blamed it on novelist Rebecca Brandewyne. The couple divorced in 1997.

Brock was accused of building two fake pipe bombs in March 2003, then putting them on his porch and telling police he saw a car leaving the scene. The information Brock gave led police to Brandewyne’s car.

A police bomb squad destroyed what turned out to be a FedEx box filled with nails, two capped pipes, wiring, silver powder and a 9-volt battery. Witnesses at the trial said Brock bought some of the items at a hardware store.

Brock will be sentenced July 1 and could face up to a year in jail.
