Local wines

To the editor:

It was surprising to see a story in the Journal-World about wine appreciation in Lawrence without a single mention of the local vineyards and their award-winning wines. Many of these wineries have been open for years, even on Sundays, for very intimate tastings and wine purchases. Nearly all the wines can be tasted any day you stop in.

Prior to Prohibition, Kansas was one of the top grape-producing states in the nation. Were it not for the extended duration of Prohibition in our state (some of which still lingers today), it’s likely Kansas would already be back near the top. The industry is recovering, albeit slowly, and many of the wines are a much better value than you would purchase from a commercial liquor store.

Local vineyards have grape-picking and crushing parties that are G-rated family events and excellent opportunities to see how wine is made by participating and not just seeing it on the screen.

The movie “Sideways” made many people laugh (even harder when the coveted wine in the movie turns out to be half Merlot) and taught a little about wine. If thinking about it makes you thirsty or curious, consider a glass or two with the winemakers at Davenport, Kugler and Holy-Field. You’ll learn more about wine from people who are making and not just selling it.
