SMNW stifles FSHS

? Free State High’s girls soccer squad completed a disappointing regular season with a 2-0 loss to Shawnee Mission Northwest on Tuesday at the Shawnee Mission Athletic Complex.

The Firebirds (2-13-1) will be seeded seventh in their regional and travel Tuesday to either Manhattan or Topeka Washburn Rural.

“We’re disappointed in the loss and our regular season,” FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said. “We feel, losing five overtime games, we should have had a better result with our win-loss record.”

Tuesday, the Firebirds and Cougars battled to a 0-0 halftime score. SMNW then took the lead for good with about 25 minutes to play, and scored again in final minute.

Pendleton said Megan Hrenchir had an “outstanding game in the goal.”

“We’re at a point where moral victories are insignificant,” Pendleton said. “We need to put two halves of soccer together where we play with a spark and emotion, and technically and tactically do what we need to do to have some success.”
