KU to buy former Sprint headquarters

? The University of Kansas Hospital will purchase the former corporate headquarters of Sprint, officials announced Thursday.

The hospital plans to move offices such as finance and information management and may move some outpatient services to the building, freeing up space at the KU Medical Center. It has signed a sales contract with Sprint.

“Just about every program is short on space,” said Dennis McCulloch, a hospital spokesman.

McCulloch said the price of the building wouldn’t be disclosed until after the closing date, which will be in 30 to 90 days. A press release said the purchase was a “multimillion dollar transaction.”

The 233,000-square-foot building is at 2330 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Westwood, about 1 1/2 miles from the hospital’s main site. Sprint’s headquarters are now in Overland Park.

Hospital officials said both KU and the hospital, which is affiliated with the university but governed by an independent board, considered purchasing the property. The university ultimately decided it wasn’t interested in purchasing the building while the hospital found it to be a good fit.

“Our overall growth as an organization in the last seven years has created significant need for office and clinical space,” Irene Cumming, president and CEO, said in a statement. “We have hospital employees in three other buildings across the metropolitan area. Consolidating them to a single location close to the main hospital will make us more effective and efficient.”

McCulloch said it was too early to say which clinical programs might move to the facility.
