Highs in the 70s for Cinco de Mayo

Put on your Cinco de Mayo sombrero and break out the sunglasses this morning — it’s a bright sunny start to the Mexican national holiday, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. Clouds are moving in, but temperatures will climb into the 70s, Schack said.

At 8:30 a.m., the skies were mostly sunny and the temperature in downtown Lawrence was 49, with a southeast 5-mph wind putting the wind chill at 47, Schack said.

“I think we do see a fair amount of clouds in the forecast,” she said. However, “most of the precipitation and moisture is being held up on the opposite ends of the U.S.”

Today’s high in Lawrence will top out at 72 degrees by late this afternoon, Schack said. Winds will be from the south at 5 to 15 mph, gusting to 25 mph.

Tonight, temperatures drop to a low of 52 by early Friday morning. Friday’s afternoon high will climb to 75 under partly cloudy skies.

“By tomorrow, there’s a little bit more moisture…we do have an isolated chance for a thunderstorm on Friday afternoon,” she said.

Saturday’s morning low will be 58, with the high climbing to 81 degrees by Saturday afternoon.
