Ryun, Kline not running for governor

? U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun and Atty. Gen. Phill Kline, both Republicans, today said they are not going to run for governor in 2006.

For the past few days, Republicans have been jockeying for position within the GOP in hopes of challenging Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a Democrat who is expected to seek re-election.

Both Ryun, whose district includes west Lawrence, and Kline are considered conservative Republicans.

“I plan to run for re-election. That has been my plan for some time,” Kline said when asked if he was going to run for governor. Ryun said he plans to run for re-election to a sixth term in Congress.

On Monday, House Speaker Doug Mays, R-Topeka, said he is leaning toward running for governor. Other possible candidates include Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh, State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins and Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt of Independence.

U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran of Hays last week said he would not seek the governor’s office.

Asked about the movement in the GOP, Sebelius deadpanned, “It comes as a shock and disappointment that I am not going to run unopposed, if I chose to run again.”

She said she will announce her intentions next year.
