Lawrence Police chase suspects to K.C.

Three juveniles suspected in a Lawrence crime spree were arrested Monday afternoon after they led police on a high-speed chase along the Kansas Turnpike.

Kansas Highway Patrol troopers used spiked sticks to flatten at least one tire on one of the two vehicles driven by the suspects, ending the chase in Kansas City, Kan., said Sgt. Dan Ward, Lawrence Police spokesman.

One Lawrence squad car was struck near the East Lawrence turnpike entrance, but there were no injuries in the chase.

Both of the vehicles driven by the suspects, a Chevrolet Suburban and Chevrolet Caprice, had been stolen Monday afternoon in Lawrence, Ward said.

Here is how police said the incidents unfolded:

At 2:45 p.m., police were called about an attempted purse-snatching at the Dillons grocery store at 1015 W. 23rd St. At 2:50 p.m. a purse-snatching took place in the parking lot of Checker’s grocery store, 2300 La. The suspect was seen getting into a Suburban.

At 3:42 p.m. a police officer reported seeing the Suburban next to a Chevrolet Caprice in the parking lot at the Lawrence Community Building, 11th and Vermont streets. Both vehicles left the lot, and the officer followed them to near Sixth Street and attempted to stop them. The drivers did not stop and drove north over the Kansas River bridge into North Lawrence.

“At the turnpike entrance, the Suburban rammed one of our police cars, then they both entered the turnpike and headed east,” Ward said.

The chase reached speeds of up to 90 mph, Ward said. The Suburban lost one tire to the spike sticks on the turnpike but continued eastbound, he said.

The pursuit ended in western Kansas City, Kan. The Caprice and Suburban separated in Kansas City and eventually came to a stop, although Ward said he didn’t know exactly where the stops occurred. A witness said he saw the Suburban with Lawrence Police around it in a ditch off of the I-70 exit at 78th Street. The Kansas Turnpike Authority said the Caprice stopped at 110th Street and I-70.

Police arrested one juvenile who was in the Suburban after a short foot chase, Ward said. Two boys were arrested at the Caprice, he said.

Police also learned the Caprice had been stolen from where it was parked at the Community Building and the Suburban was stolen from where it was parked at Hallmark Cards Production Center, 101 McDonald Drive, Ward said.

Police were trying to finish their investigation Monday night, and no other details were available.
