Temperatures to climb from record low to upper 50s

January-like weather crept into Lawrence this morning, chilling off temperatures to a new record low for this date.

“It’s just a very cold stretch we’re in right now,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “Make sure you grab a jacket, if not a coat. . . . We’re only heading up into the upper 50s this afternoon.”

This morning’s low dipped down to 25, breaking the old record low of 33 degrees for this date, set in 1961, she said. The average overnight low is 53 for this date.

Today’s morning low of 25 was the coldest May temperature recorded since 1894, she said.

At 8:30 a.m., the temperature had climbed to 37, with a 6-mph northwesterly wind making the wind chill feel like 32 degrees. Skies were mostly sunny.

“There’s a lot of sunshine in the forecast today,” Schack.said.

Today’s high will climb to 59, with northwesterly winds 8 to 12 mph, she said. The average high for this date is 73.

“Patchy frost is still possible tonight,” she said. Overnight, the temperature will drop off to 33 degrees by early Tuesday morning, she said.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny, with the high reaching 62 degrees.

Wednesday’s morning low will be 38, with the high climbing to 69 degrees under partly cloudy skies.

Afternoon temperatures will finally climb into the 70s Thursday through Saturday, she said.
