Democratic input

To the editor

A recent Saturday Column asking how to fill the needs of a growing Lawrence should encourage our politicians to invite citizens to attend a meeting where they could offer possible solutions to our growth problems.

As I travel through parts of our city I see some chances to solve this problem. I notice there are several acres of unused land such as the area on Louisiana Street south of the abandoned grade school. If houses could be built here, shoppers could walk to the grocery store, rather than drive their car a mile. There was a good editorial in the Journal-World April 19 entitled “Walkable city” that said, “if we want people to walk we need more desirable destinations within walking distance. How about a downtown grocery store?” I hope we can maintain our democratic system of government.
