Flamingo owner reports return of flock

Most of the plastic flamingos missing from a Douglas County woman’s property have been returned.

Cyrilla Loria said a neighbor spotted 37 of her flamingos Monday morning near her yard on East 550 Road.

“They put one of them in the ground, and the rest of them were dumped in the yard,” Loria said. The flamingos must have been returned late Sunday night or early Monday morning, she said.

Last week Loria discovered her flock of plastic flamingos, pictured above, was missing. She reported the loss, estimated at $230, to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

“I just feel wonderful about this,” Loria said. “I thought it was probably a prank. I’m just glad they’re back, and the pasture looks so pretty now.”

Commission reviews Lone Star resolution

Douglas County commissioners Monday reviewed regulations and rules for Lone Star Lake Park.

The county has enrolled Lone Star in the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Community Fisheries Assistance Program. That means the county will no longer require Lone Star Lake permits for fishing, boats and motors.

Commissioners didn’t vote on the amended rules and regulations resolutions for Lone Star at Monday’s meeting. But the amendments will be on the consent agenda at a future commission meeting.

County engineer Keith Browning said he didn’t think there were any downsides to the agreement with the state, though he noted some Lone Star fisherman aren’t happy about the idea.

“They thought it would cause an influx of people out there and hurt the fishing experience,” he said.

Memorial

About $2,000 donated to Hein family

A Lawrence woman is thankful for the almost $2,000 she’s received in donations to help pay for her son’s funeral.

Elizabeth Hein says since the Journal-World and 6News stories ran last week, she’s received many checks from people ranging from $10 dollars to $500. Among the donations, the Lawrence Indian United Methodist Church donated $500 to the Wesley Josef Hein Memorial Fund.

Wesley Hein choked to death March 6, and the Hein family is thousands of dollars in debt because of the funeral expenses.

Wesley was a kindergartner at Prairie Park School.
