Misdirected gift

To the editor:

In the past when donating money to a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, I had faith that this money would be going to charity. Now with the recent donation of $100,000 from the Knights of Columbus, a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, going to a political agenda in support of the gay marriage ban in Kansas, and not charity, I am left to believe that any donations I make to a nonprofit group, whether it be to a relief fund, a church bake sale, a homeless shelter or a T-shirt bought at a parade may not go to help those in need. It could more than likely go to a political campaign.

How can this happen? The law, I thought, prevented this. I will not be donating any more money to nonprofit agencies. I will go downtown and hand it out to the homeless on the streets or stand outside a burning building and give it to the people running out of their homes. Who needs the middle person? This way I am assured it is going to those in need.
