Faith frictions

To the editor:

The only good thing about Sen. Sam Brownback’s support for churches endorsing political candidates is that it further disqualifies him from serious consideration at a presidential nominee.

What are already breaches in the separation of church and state would become chasms. Can you imagine the schisms that would arise in congregations as they and the pastor argue over which candidates to endorse? It would be the death of religion in this country, not its salvation.

I suggest the Journal-World poll local ministers for their views on Brownback’s endorsement of this mischievous and unconstitutional idea. My guess is that they, too, will shrink from something that not only would jeopardize their tax-exempt status but would cause ruinous friction among the faithful.
