Local teams washed

Wet grounds in Springfield, Mo., forced the cancellation of Wednesday’s scheduled Kansas University softball and baseball games against Southwest Missouri State.

The KU softball team was slated to play an afternoon twinbill and the KU baseball team a single night game against the Bears.

KU softball has had its last seven games called off because of rain or wet grounds, and the Jayhawks (15-9) will open Big 12 Conference play Friday night at No. 4 Texas without having played a game for a week.

KU’s baseball team (20-8) also will open conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Nebraska at Hoglund Ballpark. The KU-SMS rainout will be made up May 11.

Also Wednesday, Free State High’s second attempt to open its baseball season at home against Kansas City Washington was postponed because of wet grounds. The Firebirds originally were to play their first game Tuesday.
