Chance for showers overnight

The calendar says this is the first week of spring. But winter is hanging around the Lawrence area, keeping temperatures more than 10 degrees below average today, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“Today, it’s not really going to feel too much like spring,” Schack said.

At 4:40 p.m., the temperature was 48 degrees, with a southeast 7-mph wind. The average high for this date is 60, with the average low 38.

Overnight, the low will drop to 38, with clouds thickening up and a chance for showers again Thursday morning. The National Weather Service in Topeka says there’s a 30 percent chance of showers tonight after midnight and a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday morning.

“We go from the 40s today to the 60s tomorrow,” Schack said. Thursday’s high will climb to 65, with another chance for isolated thunderstorms, she said.

Friday’s morning low will be 39, with the high reaching 54 Friday afternoon under cloudy skies.

On Tuesday, Lawrence had a rain-snow mix that brought in 0.19 of an inch of precipitation at Lawrence Municipal Airport, Schack said.

“The snow we saw yesterday is not too unusual,” Schack said. The average snow for the month of March is 2.62 inches.
