Vandals spread anti-war message
Graffiti, banners found downtown; recruiting office, cars defaced
Graffiti and banners protesting two years of war in Iraq were found early Sunday on downtown Lawrence buildings and military recruiting offices as well as government vehicles on the Kansas University campus.
Lawrence Police and KU Public Safety Department officers are investigating, but no arrests had been made. Saturday marked the second anniversary of the start of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq to depose Saddam Hussein.

Grafitti was sprayed on a window at the United States Navy Career Center at 23rd and Louisiana streets.
Among the slogans found on the 6-foot-by-8-foot banners and the spray-painted graffiti were “U.S. Out of Iraq,” “Stop the Killing” and “Blood of the War Is On Us,” according to police.
Banners were hung on the city parking garage in the 900 block of New Hampshire, Silver Works, 715 Mass., and Children’s Orchard, 742 Mass. The culprits would have had to climb to the tops of the buildings to hang the banners, Lawrence Police Sgt. Dave Hubbel said.
“Whoever did this was basically trespassing, because we contacted the (business) owners, and they did not want them up there,” Hubbel said of the banners.
Similar anti-war slogans were spray-painted in red on windows of the military recruiting offices at 23rd and Louisiana streets. In addition, a Super Glue-type substance was poured on some of the door locks, Hubbel said.
At KU, six government vehicles parked in the area of the Military Sciences Building were spray-painted with anti-war slogans, as was the glass on a door to the building, said KU Police Sgt. Randy Kern. Total damage was estimated at $1,400.
