Changing times

To the editor:

There will soon be a vote about a constitutional ban on “same-sex marriages” and any benefits therefrom. This is strongly supported by conservative churches and people quoting the Biblical prohibitions against homosexuality. The Bible rightly criticizes such activity because homosexuality at that time was always exploitative. Essentially it was about homosexual rape. Heterosexual rape was also condemned. No person in those days dared “come out” as loving someone in an egalitarian way as an expression of their natural attraction.

Since genetic studies have shown that homosexuals have a different genetic makeup it would seem that love is love, whether homosexual or heterosexual. Exploitative relations, whether homo- or hetero-sexual are rightly condemned. But the Bible says nothing about loving, mutual, committed relationships for the same sex. It does have stories of deep friendships for the same sex. Might these have been closet homosexual relationships? I believe so.

My wife and I have been married over 55 years and I would testify that our love is not threatened by some people’s homosexual love.
