Deputy charged in death of volunteer firefighter

Leavenworth — A Leavenworth County sheriff’s deputy has been charged with vehicular homicide in the December death of a volunteer firefighter who was killed in a collision with the deputy’s cruiser as the two were responding to a rollover accident.

Robert L. Peterman Jr., of Basehor, could face up to a year in jail if convicted of the misdemeanor charge.

Jared M. Moore, 19, also of Basehor, was killed Dec. 29 after his vehicle was struck from behind by Peterman’s cruiser. The Kansas Highway Patrol said Moore had slowed to turn at an intersection when his car was struck.

Johnson Co. senator diagnosed with cancer

Topeka — A state senator from Johnson County has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is undergoing treatment in Boston.

Barbara Allen, R-Overland Park, disclosed her illness Thursday. She said in a statement that her cancer was in an early stage and was treatable.

However, Allen missed Senate sessions this week and will be treated at Harvard University’s Cancer Center. She said she would return to her legislative duties soon.

Allen, a 44-year-old attorney, is chairwoman of the Senate Assessment and Taxation Committee. She was elected to the Senate in 2000 and re-elected last year.
