Model democracy

To the editor:

This letter is to all of you who wish to force democracy on the Middle East. I am a strong advocate for democracy and wish, too, that all in the world were ruled by the democratic processes. But many corrupt institutions do exist in other countries and I believe that to force democracy on people is just like the dictatorships they already endure. Let the people desire it strongly enough and it will come. They will fight for it and not against us forcing it on them.

Our desires to force every government to follow the democratic program is thwarted by the hatred of America by those same countries. If any other country wanted to bring democracy upon the lands of Lebanon and the like, it may work. But because Americans have supported ideologies and actions that have caused the death and destruction of hundreds of thousands of Arabs and their infrastructures in the world, the Arab world has turned its back to the wants and needs of America.

Let’s sit back, show the world how a great democracy works and nurture democracy in other parts of the world — not shove it down their throats.

David Omar,
